This Earth Day, Let’s Get Serious

On Earth Day 2011, the Green Party urges the Obama administration and both sides of the aisle in Congress to get serious about global warming, clean energy, and making the transition to a carbon-free, nuclear-free economy.

Can you help us promote Green candidates and campaigns today?

It’s time to replace the ideology of unlimited growth with a set of principles based on sustainable use of land and resources.

It’s time to make democratic reforms that limit the power of major corporations, who have too often fought measures to protect the earth’s delicate ecological balance in the rush for short-term profits.

It’s time to put the people who will do this in office by making an investment in the Green Party.

The Green Party works every day to promote ecological wisdom. We are asking for your support to help us promote hundreds of Green candidates on Earth Day 2012. They will be campaigning on:

Creating millions of new jobs in conservation, safe and clean energy cultivation, and retrofitting buildings;

Creating incentives, legislation, and reforms to provide renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, geo-thermal, marine, and other clean renewable sources;

Phasing out currently operating nuclear power plants and refusing to license new ones;

Replacing car traffic with energy-efficient mass transportation;

Placing absolute limits on greenhouse gas emissions;

Putting a stop to hydrofracking, the destructive process of forcing chemicals into the ground to release oil and gas, and

Ending subsidies and tax breaks for fossil-fuel industries and off-shore drilling projects.

The Green Party promotes this seriously green agenda every day, and we need your help to do it for another year. In celebration of Earth Day, please support the Green Party now.

Make Earth Day every day by supporting the Green Party in every way.

March 2011 GreenLine – Spring to Support the Green Party!

Greens Respond to Libyan Airstrikes, Warn Against Selective Support of Democratic Movements Worldwide

Green Party leaders today warned that western military intervention, now unfolding with air strikes against Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi’s forces allegedly to create a no-fly zone, could escalate into a new US/NATO war on a Muslim nation rather than the stated goal of humanitarian protection for Libyan civilians and aid for rebels.

The Green Party has supported movements for democracy throughout the Middle East and Africa and their efforts to remove violently repressive and corrupt dictators like Muammar Gadhafi.  But Green leaders insisted that the imposition of a no-fly zone by foreign attack is an illegitimate intervention in a civil war that Libyans have the right to resolve without interference from western powers for whom humanitarian claims have been cover for economic and geopolitical domination.

“Greens remain skeptical of US intentions, noting the selective attention to the suffering of civilians resisting repressive governments in the Middle East. Why no intervention when US client-state Bahrain recently slaughtered its opposition? ” asked Muhammed Malik, co-chair of the Miami-Dade Green Party.

Do You Want the Green Party to Succeed? Read On, and Step Up!

Wisconsin. Japan. The Arab Spring and Libya. Signs are all around us that our political voice is needed – and has a greater potential audience – than ever before. The question before us is: does the Green Party have the political will to take advantage of this opportunity?

The question before YOU is: what are YOU willing to do to build that political will and make it happen?

The Green Party has been a place where many of us have learned, found inspiration, and found comrades in the struggle for grassroots democracy. The Green Party has also stumbled, been knocked down, and been a source of frustration for all of us at times. When we look at what Green Parties in Europe and Australia can do, we all hope that the Green Party in the United States can get there, but we know that it will be a long road.

We need your support to go down that road to success. There’s no question about that. Building a stronger fundraising base for the party at all levels is imperative if we are to win elections and be taken seriously.

Please make a contribution today.

Our future is up to you: the grassroots Greens who make up every local and state Green Party, and the backbone of the national party. We need your help today, and we need you to help get others to give as well. Please spread the word.

February 2011 GreenLine – Show Your Love for the Green Party!

Our Special Fundraising Campaign Has Begun – Show Your Love

This Valentine’s Day, show your love for the Green Party! We talk about love a lot – whether its our continuing support for marriage equality and LGBT rights or our stance for solving problems with discussion and assistance, not sanctions and bombs. On those and a hundred other issues, we seek to make friends – not enemies – across the political aisle and across international borders.

And that’s why you love the Green Party – because we know our values and we stick to them. We want you to stick with us throughout 2011, and help us build strong federal campaigns in 2012. We’re not some party that’s just looking for a good time on Valentine’s Day, only to dump you a week later. We’re looking for a long-term relationship with our supporters and activists. To build that solid relationship, we need your help.

Promoting our vision for strong 2012 campaigns won’t be free. We need your financial support to make it happen. Make the commitment to a long-term relationship with the Green Party today. You can make a one-time contribution or sign up to be a monthly donor.

The Green Party is initiating this special campaign to help put us in a strong position for 2012 by investing in new staff and equipment and strengthening our state parties by paying awaited state-sharing funds.

We are asking for a contribution today and for your help expanding the campaign to your local and state Green Party supporters. We need everyone to participate. Even a few dollars makes a big difference. We are working to raise $1,000 from Greens in each state by April 1. Help us get there by making a contribution today and spreading the word!

Greens Celebrate Steps Toward Democracy in Egypt

Over the weekend, the Green Party of the United States congratulated the Egyptian people and called President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation a huge step towards democracy, human rights, and stability for their country.

“The Egyptian revolution is a victory for the people of Egypt, and also the victory for an idea – the idea that violent regimes can be overthrown through nonviolent means,” said Romi Elnagar, member of the Green Party of Louisiana and wife and mother of Egyptian-Americans. “While police and rampaging pro-Mubark thugs killed 350 and injured thousands more, the protesters themselves remained overwhelmingly peaceful.”

US Greens hoped for an end to the 30-year-old ‘emergency decree’ and for a broad-based transitional government that embraced opposition parties, to begin the work of dismantling the brutally oppressive Mubarak regime. The next step will take place when the military relinquishes power and Egyptians establish a civil government with a constitution, free and fair elections, democratic institutions, and the means to solve problems like unemployment and poverty.

How we won with 1.4% of the vote…

It was a small victory, but one that begs to be duplicated across the country.  Last week Howie Hawkins, the Green Party of New York State’s candidate for Governor, polled over 58,000 votes for just under 1.5% of the total for that office.  Howie won’t be going to Albany with those numbers, but those fifty thousand votes translate into ballot access for Green Party candidates in New York for the next four years.

Now, instead of having to petition their way onto ballots for each election between now and 2014, New York candidates from city councils on up to our 2012 Presidential ticket can spend their time and resources promoting their campaigns.  The same thing can happen in Texas, thanks to the Green Party’s Ed Lindsay.  When he polled 6% for Comptroller of Public Accounts, the Green Party of Texas won continued access to the ballot for the next four years.

Can you help us build similar campaigns across the country?

Last week, just under 55% of American voters saw a Green Party candidate somewhere on their ballot.  With the victories of last Tuesday, Green Party candidates in the four most populous states in the U.S. will have access to the ballot simultaneously for the first time in over a decade.  Can you help us expand this list, and work toward the day when every Green Party candidate in the country has the same right to the ballot as Democrats and Republicans?

Green Parties from California to Michigan to Massachusetts also won continuing access to ballots in their states.  The road to guaranteed access to ballots in 2012 begin today.  Can you get behind us and turn small wins like Howie Hawkins’ 1.4% in New York into big wins?

Thank you for your support!

P.S. Did you know that the eleven Green Party candidates for U.S. Senate polled over a half-million votes last week, the highest total since 2000?  The Green Senatorial Campaign Committee contributed to ten of these candidates and continues to work for future Green Party candidates for U.S. Senate (and U.S. House!).  Find out more about the committee and support their work here.

Don’t Turn the Page on Iraq – Return the Book

Last night, President Obama said that it is “time to turn the page” on the occupation of Iraq.  The Green Party has been working for years to end this destructive war and looks forward to the day when all our troops have left.  But we know that we cannot simply “turn the page” and turn attention elsewhere.  We have read some books, and we know that when you turn a page – although the scene changes slightly – the story stays the same.

Turn the page of the latest teen saga and the scene shifts from a coffee shop to the high school cafeteria, but the story stays the same.  Turn the page from Iraq to Afghanistan and the story – occupation to protect U.S. interests – stays the same.

Can you help us take out a new book about a real end of U.S. occupations?

Turn the page of the latest mystery thriller and the characters shift from computer hackers to police detectives, but the story stays the same.  Turn the page from “combat troops” to non-combat “advisors” and the story – destabilization and attacks precipitated by foreign forces – stays the same.

The Green Party demands real peace – not partial drawdowns and redeployments to different theaters – and calls for Americans to demand complete withdrawal from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

The Green Party offers candidates who truly understand that every million spent occupying foreign lands is another million that can’t be spent re-building our infrastructure, educating Americans, and fighting climate change.  Look for candidates running in your area in our comprehensive candidate database.

Can you help us build a strong party that can support more candidates for local, state, and federal office?

The Green Party knows that turning the page on the decade-long invasion of Iraq will not change the story. We need your help to change the chapter and finally return the book on American occupations for a new one with a new cast of characters in Congress, your state legislature, and your city council.

Australian Parliament Goes Green – Congress is Next!

Last weekend the Green Party elected its first member of the Australian House of Representatives.  The party also won 14% of the vote in the Australian Senate, winning the balance of power in that body.  Because neither of the major parties hold a majority, each must come to the Greens to build coalitions for new legislation. Greens around the country celebrated this historic victory.

We need your help to follow suit and elect Greens to Congress.

Party Leader Bob Brown called the showing a “Greenslide”.  Greens won in each of the country’s six states, taking a total of ten seats. Commentators in the Sydney Morning Herald reported that the win was “phenomenal” and that the Greens are taking the Senate on “quite a move to the left after years and years of being dominated by the right.”

Australian Greens can thank a proportional voting system for a small part of their success.  Greens here continue working to break through exclusionary debates and media silence to elect Greens to office on the local and state level.

With your support, we can elect Greens to Congress.

The 300th Green candidate declared their run for office here in the United States earlier this month.  Check out all of our 2010 candidates and find a candidate near you.

Please support our Green Party candidates on the county, state, and federal levels by making a contribution to the Green Party of the United States.  With your help, we can follow the Australian lead and elect a Green to Congress!

P.S. If you have already shown your support for the Green Party of the United States recently, we thank you.  Consider supporting the Green Senatorial Campaign Committee as well.  This committee is devoted to collecting resources to support Green candidates for U.S. House and Senate.
